February 2009 - Luminair take a Grand approach to sustainable lighting...
Luminair Ltd. continues to make its stand in the sustainable and eco-friendly lighting arena by supporting recent eco self build ‘The Groundhouse’ featured in this year’s new series of Grand Designs.
Inspired by Earthships, designed by acclaimed architect and ‘Garbage Warrior’ Michael Reynolds, The Groundhouse is a type of passive solar building designed principally to employ thermal & solar heating and cooling, solar and wind electricity, contained sewage treatment, water harvesting, food production and building with natural and recycled materials – generally to have minimal impact on the environment and its resources in build and use.
Luminair’s approach to lighting manufacture and design perfectly matches those of the Groundhouse ethos and so when approached by Daren Howarth to design and specify the lighting for his eco self build, Luminair were more than delighted to get involved.
The final lighting installation features Luminair’s own ‘Eco’ range of sustainable LED-based lighting fixtures, which use sustainably sourced hardwoods and recycled aluminium in their construction. Project designer and Luminair founder Jason Thawley follows, “The lighting we produce I think mirror the original ideas employed by the Groundhouse project – our designs and products not only take on the latest energy saving technologies going to wear that Eco-Friendly badge, but also combine this with local, sustainable and recycled materials in their construction, as well as ensuring our manufacturing process is kept as sustainable and local as possible.”
In addition to Luminair’s own products, the installation also includes energy saving compact fluorescent fixtures and bulbs from company Megaman, specified by Luminair alongside their own products to create a balanced and cost effective lighting scheme. Jason Thawley explains why - “We believe a great energy saving lighting installation needs to combine the best features and benefits that both CFL and LED lighting technology have to offer. We really like Megaman products as although a large international company, Megaman are unique in the way they do business. As well as winning numerous environmental awards they invest heavily in research and development and stand ahead of the rest when it comes to eco credentials. Industry firsts such as making all of its products free from liquid mercury, and introducing fully recyclable lamp bases along with an unparalleled and comprehensive range of products makes Megaman our first choice in supporting our own products in projects such as this.”
